Mayfair Casino is a land-based casino at 33 Errol Spring Avenue in Vulindlela Heights, Mthatha, on the edge of the CBD with direct access from the N2. The gaming floor covers about 21,500 sq ft split between a main floor and a Privé room, and carries 200 slot machines with denominations from 1c to R25 plus 6 tables covering roulette, blackjack and Raise 'Em Poker. Machines run from 09:00 to 03:00 and tables from 11:00 to 03:00. It opened in December 2018 as the first licensed casino in Mthatha, inside a Billion Group precinct that also holds the 60,000 m² BT Ngebs City centre and the 90-room Mayfair Hotel. Betting in South Africa: key facts

Minimum age18
RegulatorLand-based casinos in South Africa are licensed by the nine provincial gambling authorities. The National Gambling Board oversees the system nationally but does not issue operating licences itself. Mthatha sits in the Eastern Cape, so the provincial authority for this venue is the Eastern Cape Gambling Board.

Online, only sports and horse-racing betting with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board is lawful in South Africa; interactive online casino games are not licensed here. A physical casino floor is a separate and fully licensed setting, which is why every page on this site describes a visit to a venue rather than an internet account.

Planning a visit, step by step

  1. Aim for 33 Errol Spring Avenue in Vulindlela Heights, on the edge of the Mthatha CBD. The precinct sits directly off the N2, which is the road most visitors arrive on from East London roughly 230 km to the south-west or from Kokstad and Durban to the north-east.
  2. Bring a green ID book, a smart ID card, a driving licence or a passport. The gaming floor is for visitors aged 18 and over and staff check at the entrance.
  3. Time the visit around the split floor: the machines run from 09:00 to 03:00 while the tables only open at 11:00, so a mid-morning arrival is a machines-only arrival.
  4. Park inside the precinct. Self-parking and valet are both available, and the casino entrance, the Mayfair Hotel reception and the BT Ngebs City mall doors all sit within the same complex.
  5. Decide before you walk in what the evening is worth to you, and treat that figure as the price of the entertainment rather than as money you expect to see again.

Before you go

Mayfair Casino is the gaming room of a mixed-use precinct, not a stand-alone resort out of town. The same development carries the 60,000 m² BT Ngebs City regional shopping centre and the 90-room Mayfair Hotel, all built by Billion Group as a single entertainment complex of about R100 million and opened in December 2018.

  • Dress — smart casual is the safe assumption for the floor, and the Privé room is the dressier end of it.
  • Cash — everything on the floor is priced in rand; machine denominations run from 1c up to R25, so the practical decision is how much you take in, not which coin fits.
  • Timing — machines from 09:00, tables from 11:00, both until 03:00. The last three hours of the night are the busiest.
  • Bookings and current promotions — this is an independent guide, so confirm rates, hours and any running promotion with the venue itself before you travel.

What the venue actually is

The casino is one room inside a mixed-use precinct, and that is the single most useful thing to know before driving in. Billion Group built the complex as a single R100 million development — regional shopping centre, four-star hotel and casino — and completed it in a little under a year, with the casino opening in December 2018 as the first licensed casino in Mthatha. The gaming room runs to roughly 21,500 sq ft and is divided between the main floor and the quieter Privé area.

For a visitor that means an evening here rarely has to be only about gaming. The 60,000 m² BT Ngebs City centre is on the same site, the 90-room Mayfair Hotel is a few doors along Errol Spring Avenue at number 35, there are three restaurants and a bar in the complex, and the function space seats up to 275 guests. Anyone in your party who is under 18 or simply not interested has somewhere to be.

Reading the hours before you drive

The floor opens in two stages, and getting this wrong is the most common wasted trip. The 200 slot machines start at 09:00. The 6 tables — American and electronic roulette, blackjack and Raise 'Em Poker — do not open until 11:00. Both close at 03:00, which makes the late evening the fullest part of the day and the mid-morning the quietest.

Distance makes that timing matter more than it would in a city. Mthatha sits roughly 230 km from East London along the N2 and a good deal further from Durban, so most visitors are arriving from somewhere rather than dropping in. Check the current hours with the venue before committing to the drive, particularly around public holidays, when casino floors across South Africa adjust their timetables.

How to use this guide

Every page here answers one practical question about visiting: what the door checks, what the floor holds, how money goes in and comes back out, and why there is no app. We publish no prize figures and no promotional amounts, because those change every season and a stale number reads as a promise. Rates, current promotions and exact opening hours belong to the venue and should be confirmed there before a long drive.

Gambling is for visitors aged 18 and over. If it stops being fun, the National Responsible Gambling Programme runs a free 24-hour counselling line on 0800 006 008, takes a WhatsApp message with the word help on 076 675 0710, and arranges free self-exclusion sessions; self-exclusion can also be set up through the venue itself or through the provincial gambling authority.

A short history of the venue

Mayfair Casino opened in December 2018 as the first licensed casino in Mthatha, the largest town in the former Transkei region of the Eastern Cape. Until then the nearest licensed floors were a long drive away, which is why the opening was treated locally as an event rather than simply another retail tenant.

It was built by Billion Group as the gaming component of a single mixed-use development of about R100 million, alongside the BT Ngebs City regional shopping centre of roughly 60,000 m² and a four-star hotel of 90 rooms. The whole complex was completed in a little under a year, which is quick for a development of that size.

The gaming room itself was fitted out with roulette wheels and tables from a specialist manufacturer, finished differently in each of its two areas: mahogany bases and silver layouts on the main floor, darker upholstery in the Privé room. Today it runs 200 slot machines and 6 tables across about 21,500 sq ft.

The floor keeps its own hours — machines from 09:00, tables from 11:00, both closing at 03:00 — and Mthatha is a long drive for most of the country. Online platforms run around the clock; check what is licensed where you are before you play, and keep it to money you can afford to lose.
