The floor opens in two stages, and getting this wrong is the most common wasted trip. The 200 slot machines start at 09:00. Mayfair Casino opened in December 2018 as the first licensed casino in Mthatha, the largest town in the former Transkei region of the Eastern Cape. Until then the nearest licensed floors were a long drive away, which is why the opening was treated locally as an event rather than simply another retail tenant.
It was built by Billion Group as the gaming component of a single mixed-use development of about R100 million, alongside the BT Ngebs City regional shopping centre of roughly 60,000 m² and a four-star hotel of 90 rooms. The whole complex was completed in a little under a year, which is quick for a development of that size.
The gaming room itself was fitted out with roulette wheels and tables from a specialist manufacturer, finished differently in each of its two areas: mahogany bases and silver layouts on the main floor, darker upholstery in the Privé room. Today it runs 200 slot machines and 6 tables across about 21,500 sq ft.
